A Golden-fronted Woodpecker perched on a prepared limb from the south Texas region at the Santa Clara ranch.

These guys were quick and we did not have a ton of opportunities. They came in for the suet and retreated.

    R5
    600mm
    RRS tripod w/ Flexshooter
    ISO 4000
    1/1600
    f5.6

PS and LR, NI for noise. Added a sliver of canvas at bottom. Chose to leave the bit of suet on the beak, understand some may prefer without.

Hi Brian ... besides the great IQ ( as expected ) I do like the overall image because of its perfect design !!!
The BG is so nice with the variations in color . Pose and perch are great .

On the color front I would warm it up as the dark and mid tones appear quite cool , but maybe you like it that way . Matter of taste .

A real gem and TFS Andreas

Andreas, thank you for the kind words! And the keen eye..... Down below is a version with Cyans pulled out and I think maybe it ties into what you were feeling?

Not sure why that ended up as I chose WB carefully in LR and I feel like the whites were pretty close, and did not make any substantial global color corrections other than pulling blues out.

Wonderful shot I like it very much, I think however I would pull the mid tones down a fraction just to add a little more pop. I feel a very gentle haziness or perhaps a slight lack of contrast.

Wait, wait, wait..... Jon. I just want to take a looooooong pause, and cherish the moment when you suggested one of my images needs more contrast.....

Truth be told, I agree. The back and tail feathers on these are not true, deep black but they did need a punch. See for reference, and thank you both for the constructive feedback. I need to grease the wheels a bit, so to speak.

Hi Brian ... still too cold for my personal taste .
if this was mine , I would not simply reduce the color that is poking you in the eye . I would change the color balance or color grading in the effected tonal range ... via curves or color balance in PS . just my take .

Both versions look great to me. I might actually prefer the first one. Nice job with the set-up and making the most of a brief opportunity, That so often necessary in bird photography :)

Great job on this frame Brian! Love the comp, the IQ and the processing looks spot on to me.

Nothing really to add here, just a super appealing image. Nicely done man.

Exactly what a set-up image should look like. Background is great. They've done a good job of clearing the brush. Nice to shoot land birds without a TC!
