A few weeks ago I took my family to Botswana for a wonderful trip. On an earlier visit I focused primarily on avian subjects, but this time the animals ruled. This was shot early one morning, yielding some warm light.
hi Bill ,
good to see you here in the other world , hope you had a good time in bots .
you have captured a nice intimate moment of mum and kid .
all works for me in general ...
personally I would change to things in this image as an alternative , the warm tones can go slightly more orange tone ( matter of taste ) and if you have used shadow recovery globally , I would rather use it selectively on the subject and not on the whole scene . as the grass does give me a slight HDR impression , I hope you understand what I am trying to say .
So glad the animals ruled in Botswana it's awesome to see you post here in the Wildlife Forum!
Lovely tender scene with mommy zebra and her little foal. Composition works well. This image was captured early morning so I gather colours are consistent with the time of the day, light was soft and warm. Perhaps a good idea from Andreas to try achieve a richer orange tone as it could benefit the image, but it's entirely up to you.
At F10 I would expect the grass near the subjects to have a bit more 'definition' - this would contribute to a more 3D feel, if you know what I mean. Overall a wonderful capture and I really enjoyed viewing, certainly looking forward to more
Thank you all for your comments. Always appreciated. Adding a bit of orange was a useful suggestion. Here's a repost in which I used an orange (warming) filter at around 15%, which does help a bit IMO. A confession: when working at the computer I wear a pair of drugstore reading glasses, which impart a slight warming appearance. I try to remember to check the color without the glasses and make necessary corrections, but I probably forgot in this case. The RP looks better without the glasses, but too orange with them. Maybe it's time for another trip to the drug store.
Andreas, I don't recall doing any global shadow recovery. Generally I will do that selectively on the subject, or BG, if at all.
