Lovely soft light and resultant exposure. Details on the bird look good, and I like that we can see the stripe on the top of the foot. With or without the grass, the biggest problem is that you need more room below (and less room above) the bird since his gaze is downward. As is, the grass helps anchor an otherwise awkward composition. If you remove it, then the frame won't make any sense. It'll just be a bird slapped into a random crop.
