Male Sharptail in native grass. Not very many leks in native prairie. Ranching has taken a toll. Most leks now are on grazed native grasslands.I like shooting these guys in native grass. Gives a different feel. Back story I always like finding new leks. Been looking off and on through the winter for this group of birds. Earlier this spring finally narrowed it down and was pleasantly surprised to find it in native grass. As we have been through a severe drought most leks look like a desert having been grazed on top of no moisture. Processed with Dpp 4, Photoshop,Topaz noise. I think I removed a few grasses in front of the bird. Comments and critiques welcome.

Hi Kevin, glad to see your work again. Sad to hear the declining lek status in the native prairie. I really like the grass and how it has provided a little "cover" and framing for the grouse. Also, the colors are beautiful with just enough grass and then the melt . I would remove the darker few grasses as they stand out and draw my eye. A beautiful image, well done. Also, great kit you got! are you a BB guy?

Very nice. I really like the windswept grasses.
The OF FG adds a lot.
If mine, I would selectively add a couple of points of blacks to the blacks in selective coloring PS to give the bird a bit more pop.
    Really nice frame.

Very pleasing result the bird is sharp and the OOF grasses compliment the scene very well indeed.

Just buttons Ann the tracking is really nice on the R3 . Once locked on the eye you can recompose.

I really like the grasses in this shot, Kevin. You got the perfect amount of grassland context. I recently visited a STGR lek near Craig, CO with a birding tour which I was leading, but the thicker foliage didn't make for pretty pictures. I didn't even bother with pictures under the circumstances. Love the blurred areas in front and behind.

Great job locating this spot. Really appealing image, and of course the grass is just beautifully included here. I could see a version with a bit more saturation (just 3-4 points) to make the yellows richer. Very nicely done!!

    Kev,

The bird literally pops off the screen for me. I love everything that is in focus in this image. And that is not much! Love the grasses as well.
