Default reddish egret in the surf

After taking a very long break from photography, I just returned from a shooting trip to Florida with Gail B. It was a wonderful opportunity to familiarize myself with a new R5 that i had not used previously and to take my first flight shots. Shooting everyday was just what i needed to get back in the saddle and it was wonderful to meet up with other bird photographer friends. One morning we met with Mike Poole and had a good shoot round the lagoon and then some...
I had hours of shooting Big Red who is my hands down favorite subject. This image depicts one of his jumps up above the water to scan for fish before he twists, turns, pounces, and plucks. Cropped bout 50% denoise all comments welcome and appreciated.

Nice one Ann. I was wondering what pose you would post. was worried we would all post "the umbrella"pose.
Excellent HA, good separation of the legs and view of the 2 wispy tail feathers that are perfectly spaced. Good to see the catchlight.
Nice top side view of that great wingspan.

Just beautiful Ann, great light and details on the wings, just enough of a head turn, and the trailing water droplets are a nice touch.

Suppose I'll have to go back now and give him another go!

Terrific action shot. Glad to see you posting again, and glad Big Red is still out there offering great poses. Love the wing spread, water drops, tail feathers. Nicely done.

Nice, IQ is good, pose is nice, a bit more head turn would make it better of course.

Great to have you back Ann, love the light, pose and detail. HA doesn't bother me because the bird is concentrating on the next catch.

Hi Ann, wonderful image, difficult to keep up with these running, wheeling and jumping egrets. One of my favorites to photograph also when I make the trek to Ft. Desoto. I echo the previous positive comments. I am surprised you mentioned taking a break from photography as I remember seeing that you placed or won a photography contest that I happened to come across. Thank you for sharing.

Hi Joe, thank you for your comment, hope all is well w you. I did take a very long break over a year... The contest you are referring to is Nature's Best Backyard and i won the amateur category along with two highly honored images. The images were taken summer of 2019 with my Nikon gear and submitted for the 2020 contest. Finally, NBP BB was announced in January of 2022 and publication in March. Thats a long time to hold one's breath!

Glad to see you back into it Ann!! And welcome to the world of mirrorless too! Wonderful pose and composition. If anything, perhaps a touch darker would work but great job overall.

P.S. Did you have trouble with your previous user name?
