The recently concluded Galapagos trip went amazingly well. Great folks, perfect photography weather, lots of great subjects, and the world's greatest guide.

The feet of this Blue-footed Booby were photographed with the 400mm f/4 L IS DO lens and the EOS 40D on the Mongoose M3.5/Gitzo 3530 LS combination. ISO 400. Evaluative metering +1/3 stop: 1/125 sec. at f/8. Having to add much less light with the 40D than with the Mark III takes a bit of getting used to.

I did create an amazing image of a bull sea-lion chowing down on a bonita-mackerel. Check it out in Wildlife.

Interesting shot Arthur, good color and a unique angle. But according to these old eyes the legs are OOF...more than I would want if it were my shot.

Nice portrait of totipalmate feet Artie! The blue is as vivid as I remember it and in this image has the nice effect of reflecting off the white belly feathers. Are the dark marks on the feet just the rock showing through? Too bad the DoF did not produce in focus legs as well. Welcome back (almost).

Not sure but you might be right judging by the placement and the shapes... I like the sharp toenails; focus on the toes and let the rest fall where it may

My thoughts exactly Artie! I thought the focus to be on those beautiful toe nails. She should have painted them for you though ;).
This is a fantastic image. I do like the colors a lot here. Thanks for sharing.

I agree Artie, the toenails have it. I was taken by the detail of the serrations in them and caught myself wondering what they might be for?

Don't know. I will have to ask my favortie seabird biologist. Wait, that's you! I will e-mail my guide and let you know if he knows.

Hey John, Taking a second look, it seems that the serrations that we are seeing are on the inner side of the toes. Perhaps we are seeing a side view of serrations that are actually on the bottom of the toe, sort of like seeing a side view of a loaf of bread... If they are simply a side view/continuation of serrations that are on the bottom of the toes then it is likely that they aid in holding their fish dinners...

In the meantime, I wrote Juan.

I heard back from Juan. He stated that the serrations (that are indeed towards the top of the toe) make scratching more efficient. Go figure. The kid is brilliant.

I buy that. Essentially, the serrated nails are better nit-pickers!
