I don't do much HK work, but this was taken on an overcast morning before we had direct light. Curious what others think. Cropped for comp

I would not call this a high key image..Bird is blue.. Love your work, I would try again.

Hi Kurt, I really like this one, the simplicity of the deign, minimal colour palette and the fact all the there is just enough ripples that add context to the scene, however...
- Like the previous posting the colour cast needs addressing, go back to the WB
- To me it looks like you were at least a a third of a stop under, are you using Zebras for exposure???
- There is detail, but again the sharpening regime isn't working and so the subject appears soft
It doesn't matter if you clip the BKG it's white, but maximising data in the subject is key, then within PP you can pull it all back in and is one of the easiest to do as you have no fear of noise as there is almost (apart from the legs) no blacks & shadows.
Kurt having applied the above you have detail and some cool detail in the plumage. i would go back if you have time, it's worth it.

Steve
PS I might add a tad more above

Thank you Dan and Steve for the comments and critique. Here is another try at this. I tried to get ride of the blue colorcast, I increased the exposure by another 4th of a stop and added another round of sharpening. For some reason, I cannot get this to repost without using a url. What am I doing wrong?

Kurt, are you uploading direct ie Manage image within the thread? Try giving it a different name, if you are uploading the image with the same name then there could be a conflict?

So you type your message, then to the bottom right you hit the button 'Go Advance' that give you an 'Additional options' box and so you scroll down to Manage Image, click on that, then upload from wherever the revised file??? Is it bigger than 600kb?

Here it is finally. Thanks Steve
Hi Kurt. great you got there, if you know what you did then another positive lesson learnt.
OK certainly an improvement, but it still carries a Blue cast, here just minus the Blue in Saturation, yes its a Global adjustment and affects everything, but here its not a problem, so just take it down beyond 60-80. WB is still off based on numbers, so it is already carrying more blue, so on the Temp you go warmer ie opposite in the Blue spectrum is Yellow, ditto the Tint slider, this has a bit more green in the whites so again you add more Magenta to counter balance, so that the RGB values get closer to each other. Getting a good WB is key to everything.
Sharpening is better too, you could brush in some local Exp/Contrast into the body to help the plumage, simple, not the best way but it's quick. Always set the brush to 50% and build up the layers, never 100%.
This was where I was going based on the OP, hopefully between the two you can improve on the Raw/Tiff.
cheers
Steve
PS Added a tad more at the top FWIW????

Looks like others have covered the color cast, sharpening, and other processing nuances, so I'll offer another idea - I might rotate the image CW a bit; the bottom rings are flat, but the top ones are tilted. I might try to spilt the difference because the image looks ever-so-slightly askew as presented.
Hi Kurt ... this is for sure a form of an HK image , regardless what others think .... simply because it is dominated by very light tones.
I really like the thinking behind this shot and its simplicity .... well done .
Color cast is there ... well should be removed , or not even , matter of taste if this has a more artistic approach .
I would try to go really high key ... meaning leaving only the darker tones and the outlines of the heron visible , just a thought and my 2 cents .

Yes to a BLUE cast in the original. I too noticed the need for some CW rotation. To check, I went into PS and drew a line from the center of the eyeball on the bird to the center of the eyeball in the reflection. As in the screen capture here.
I love this as a vertical and would have loved it as a 2X3 horizontal. As a square? Not so much.
with love, artie
