Default Northern Hawk Owl, Frosted Spruce, and the Moon.

A nice and toasty -32C morning when this was taken...it's all good, the scene warmed me up inside :-) The moon was oof no matter what aperture to be used when focusing on the owl, so I took a second image while focusing on the moon and used that to replace it here. The composition was not changed, the moon exactly where it was before replacement. Hope you like this "small in the frame" owl image!

Yes, that is frost also on the owl's head...

Canon R6 + 500mm f/4 II + 1.4TC III, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/500s., f/8, ISO 800 (same for the moon replacement image), natural light, handheld, FF.

This is a really beautiful scene, Dan. The tree carries the image, and I'm good with your moon since it's entirely representative of what you saw through the viewfinder. Bird looks a bit thin, so I might up give the darks a slight bump. I think the extra contrast will help it command a bit more attention. The loss of feather detail means little for these sorts of small-in-frame images.

One sweet image very much appreciated as I sit here in +30C! Great job of the moon and enough detail in the bird to clearly see those piecing eyes.

Picture postcard Dan, a cracking image overall.

I know you don't like/use layers and masks, but a subtle Curves midtone adjustment just to pullout a bit more depth/detail in the tree.

Hi Dan, love the image. I echo the previous comments. I feel the cold just looking at your image, you're a better man than I going out in those conditions. Thank you for sharing.

Hi Daniel ... well seen and really good captured .

I would like echo Steve's thoughts here .... picture postcard that " needs" a little bit of tweaking for a bit more impact , IMHO . But already very good as presented .

Thanks guys! Everything was covered in heavy frost that morning - every tree, post, tall grass, everything turned to white. So cool (literally!) and tough on those midtones and darks lol.

Not sure if you have heard of it , but there is Photoshop where you can push the midtones and darks .... and you can do that in your warm and cozy office

LOL, you are getting soft these days Dan, or is it the new toy???
It's an image that is just so solid and one we would all aspire to, it just ticks every box.

Well conceived and well executed. I would not have minded even smaller in the frame with more below and on our right. Maybe. Still envious. Stay warm.

Thanks Artie, and I agree with you! Even smaller in the frame would have worked very well indeed.

And yes to your question, part of the reason the truckers are still protesting here in Ottawa. Quite the sight!

A gorgeous composition Daniel. Very creative and well executed - one of the nicest blue sky photos I've seen.

Man, one day would love to come shoot up there!
