    Default Red kite (Milvus milvus)

The best laid plans and all that, in advance I looked up the weather forecast for the location - sunny skies and fluffy clouds also checked again on the day- sounded like ISO 800 so off I went to Rhyader. As I approached it got progressively cloudy and by the time the birds were fed it was dull.

    Jon:

This one makes my neck hurt! Quite a dramatic pose.
I might consider moving the bird a bit left in the frame, out of the center.
    Well exposed.
Because of how dominant it is in the frame, I wish the lower wing was more in focus, esp. the shoulder area.

I feel your pain about actual weather vs. forecast. Just out this morning, same problem!

    Cheers

Hi Jon, agree with Randy's comments, moving is so easy within frame, don't add canvas as previous, overall well done.

I assume you were heading to darkest Wales... ????

Thanks Randy, Steve, I see what you mean regarding the crop, I did reposition the kite to where it is now, I re cropped to 3:2 placing the head where I thought optimal.
Steve yes the destination was Gigrin Farm, Rhyader, I had the big tower hide to myself - no one else there and only one other photographer in one of the ground level hides.

Incredible position . But then they have to be able to do this or they lose the game of life. Agree about the position in the frame . Would you not have been better at f5.6 and iso 2500 as it turns out,for a bit more DOF. I hope we see more action on this site now that the cameras can seem to handle more of everything.

Ian, maybe I could have gone to ISO 2500 some shots were taken at higher ISO, I did go to ISO 6400 but if I have to crop then IQ really suffers. I keep to a fairly wide aperture to maximise image quality, the DOF doesn't trouble me, so long as the eye is sharp I'm happy but I take your point had the wing been a little better focused it would have looked better..

Agree with Randy: the bird definitely needs to be on the left side of the frame. Spectacular pose. If it were mine, I would remove the bit of meat on her bill.

Ouch!! Easy to tweak the comp with the uniform BG should you wish. What a unique pose.
