Oh well here goes! Hopefully edging towards improvement!

Only 20 meters away but still 25% crop
I did use DxO raw this time as it looked the best result

Hi Colin .... taking your intro and reply to it .

Oh well here goes .... for me no improvement , stepping again in the same trap !!!
Again DXO .... does not help at all , IMHO.

Overprocessed , too much contrast , sharpening is overdone .... for sure my view you and others might like the presentation .
Just for clarifying ... 20 meters distance does sound more like a 75% crop in the final image . In other words ... you have left 25% of the original pixels in your postings .
If that is the case ... I am not surprised at all .
But this is just pure guess work .

The shooting angle is what it is ....
Sorry for being straight forward with my critique .

    TFS Andreas

Andreas, specifically, what do you see in the image that DxO has contributed to?
You are correct on the 75%, retaining 25%. 12 mp which is equivalent of a 43% crop from a 1DX3.
As for shooting angle, as the head position indicates, the bird was banking in front of me.
    Thanks for the comments.

Colin ... the first pass sharpening and added unneeded contrast ( albeit slightly ) , smoothed out areas without any need of smoothing . Lens correction and so forth .... that is what DXO raw is doing to your image without asking you , easy as that .
Have tried that piece of junk myself as trial ....

With that hefty cropping you just loose image quality .. so easy and not changeable . Just my 2 cents .

In general your processing is overkill , IMHO , but you see it maybe differently which is fully ok . I just rather prefer in general more subtle color / tone / detail and sharpness . And your images are standing for the opposite .... jut my take .
At the moment I am not even looking at my high end screen .... so look even not that critical.

    Cheers Andreas

BTW .... I could type a lot more and way more detailed . But it is difficult due to language barrier , limited typing speed on my side .... and we are talking and thinking in a different " editing language " .

Exposure and details on the bird look good! I agree that the contrast levels look a bit unnatural, but that's easily managed. Biggest issue here is the overhead shooting angle as there is no visual acknowledgement from the bird. The little stabs of yellow are really attractive despite that lack of eye contact.

It's sharp and it sure does fit the theme. Nice to see through the wings.

Oddly enough, apart from the steep angle I'm kinda liking this, strong contrast, reduced IQ, and all. It may be the translucence of the feathers, which I find very appealing here. I remember being happy with the IQ of a camera that was 10MP before cropping (Canon 40D)!
