Woody Drakes are so flipping handsome. Little bit of soft light here with some mixed reflections.

    R5
    840mm
    Handheld
    ISO 3200
    1/3200
    f6.3

LR and PS, selective DN. Removed a few imperfections on the water and added a little bit at right. Nothing more to tease out of the blacks in terms of my ability in case you might wonder. Audio played.

Lovely soft light brought out all the beautiful colors of this Woody. Nicely done.

Soft light is magic when photographing these beauties.
Love the low POV, the perky pose and head angle.
PP looks great with good detail throughout the bird.
    Love it!

Nice solid image of a Woodie but the flat light did not bring out the best color..
I shoot a lot in low light,, iso3200 is not soft light, that is low light, fine for shooting and I do a lot,
but it does not bring out the best in this species.....
Processing looks good, I would sharpen the eye a tad..

Dan, I agree that looking at camera settings can indicate lighting conditions. Low light, flat light, soft light, whatever vernacular one choose is irrelevant. Perhaps we should not just look at ISO 3200 when evaluating, but rather look at the combination of the exposure 'triangle'?

This was ISO 3200, 1/3200 and f6.3. It could have easily ended up ISO 1600 1/2000 and f5.6. Perhaps you'll disagree but those settings don't really indicate low light to me, at least not in Colorado.

No matter, either one likes the image or not. Personally, I love the effect on the iridescence in this lighting but... to each their own :-)

Whatever the light, soft or low, I love it. Love the pose and the head angle too. I wish for a bit more below. The only thing missing is the purple cheek patch.
All is all it is a gorgeous frame.

Looking forward to seeing these guys in breeding colours again soon (they are now in eclipse plumage up here). Great low angle, perfect parallel pose, and the type of soft, even light that I like.

Artie, thanks a bunch. I could also see a version with a bit more below, letting the reflection breathe.

Thank you much Daniel. I refer back to the Woody Drake you posted a few months ago in a calling pose on the water. That was one of the best frames I've ever seen you post, personally.

It looks perfect here....Colours, detail and sharpness spot on....The reflection takes it further.....Sometimes I go for 1/3200 SS on a 'sitting duck', on a dull day....especially if there is a chance of a take off...and if the camera can handle the ISO...why not...nothing to lose...

    Well done

    Will
