i agree with your self critique. i think you should have bumped the ISO and gotten a faster ss. the rowers would be a little sharper. the colors of your sky are awesome!!!!!!!! could saturated or boost colors for the fun of it, but it's a matter of taste.
Would straighten the horizon, do a curves adj and levels to boost contrast I think silohuettes should be at DMax (maximum black) to look their best !!! btw also did a slight crop at the bottom
Here's my attempt at lightening up the band across the image including the boat. I did a QM on the band and lightened with a levels layers, flattened and added an orange photo filter about 60%. Dan Brown
Hi Chris, I'm not an expert at this stuff but here's my description of QM. a QM is a Quick Mask. If you are using Photoshop CS3, second to the bottom of the left hand tool bar is a box with a circle in it, (Quick Mask button) click on it and you will be in Quick Mask mode. Now you can use a paint brush tool or an eraser tool to apply a reddish mask (or erase it as needed) over an area of your image that you want to protect. Once you paint the area, again click on the QM button and you will see the marching ants around the target area. At this point the area is protected from any adjustments that you apply to the image, like sharpening, noise reduction, color adj. etc. What I did on your image was to create a duplicate BG layer and selected the area across the whole image level with the boat, then I clicked on Select at the top tool bar and then clicked on "inverse" this inverts the selection so that all BUT the original selected area is protected, then I did my brightness adj. and color adj on that area only. Finally, I flattened the image. You don't have to make the dupe layer, but it lets you play with the opacity and many other things that are kind of beyond me at this point though:o. You can do many, many things with this feature of PS.
Yes, it is nasty down here in Sac, cooler by 10 degrees today than yesterday due to the thick smoke!!
