    Default Chestnut-collared Longspur (wide/habitat view)

Just back from 8 days in MN, ND, and MT. Trip was 95% birding/hiking/camping since wife and dog were in tow, but I squeezed in a bit of shooting here and there.

I was hoping for a closer view of this striking little sparrow (longspurs are named for their elongated hind claws), but they wouldn't allow any sort of photographic
approach - at least not with 20MP and 1.4x. This view represents 25% of original frame. So yeah, birds were hella far away.

I like this wide composition because it shows the relationship between bird and its preferred short-grass prairie habitat. There wasn't anything taller than 12" for miles.

    Canon 600mm f/4 IS II + 1.4x III on EOS 1DX2
    1/4000 at f/5.6, ISO 800
Processed in LR CC. Removed 3 small blades of grass for various reasons.....

It works for me too. Not every shot has to be a close up view. I like the inclusion of the environment and the pose. Nicely done!

Hi Dorian .... good to see some other kinda shot of yours .
I do like the wider view very much , nice placement of the subject .
Colors and tones ( from 1/4 to 3/4 tones ) are looking good to me .... personally I think the HL and blacks in combination with your sharpening are a touch to strong for my taste .

    Nice one

Nice habitat image, I have never seen the bird, fine looking and nice details for a small in the frame bird.

Great pose, superb habitat view. Nicel light. Details look good for large crop.

Dorian, simple and pretty BIV. Nice for going against the grain.

Subject looks well lit and I believe it possesses nice detail, however for me something is off. It looks very coarse and rigid, esp around the eye and head/beak. It does feel a touch of in terms of contrast too.

You typically have very high IQ so I'm speaking from high standards. Not sure exactly but perhaps you can nail it down.

You are correct on all counts, and those issues can be traced squarely to the fact that the subject occupied <1% of the original frame. There's not much one can do with this file out of a 20 MP body!

What I would have done with 20mp is crop this slightly from the right..way better than the OP for me.
A very nice small in the frame with more FG, looks like it is on an island.

I like the repost showing more habitat and small in the frame.

Again a target species for me.

Nice to see the originals. It works well small in the frame. The last post is my favorite, I could see the bird more to the right.
