    Default Chasing Mom...

Been biking daily around a local lake at a neighborhood park. Noticed three Gallinule families with a couple chicks each. On this overcast noon time ride finally decided to bring camera before the chicks got too big. Found Mom with three chicks tagging along at lakeside. Rode ahead, checked thoroughly for gators, laid right near waters edge. Mom went up the bank and around me while all three chicks continued to forage ahead. Wondered what would happen as they discovered Mom was far away and I now laid between Mom and chicks as they began to call. As Mom was working way back in the water, this one bold chick decided to run for her and got very close as a result. Love these ugly/cute young ones.

Well captured David. A cute bird in my eyes. Love the soft feathers and pov. I'm not quite convinced with the crop...seems the bird is a little tight in the frame, but it's no deal breaker. Minor nit pic is the blade of grass from the bird's belly down which I'd remove, and I'd prefer the legs to be sharper...maybe a faster SS? Cheers.

Cute! Sharp and fluffy simultaneously. The calling pose is good. I too would be tempted to remove the blade of grass touching the chick. I'd also prefer the subject a touch lower in the frame. I'm OK with the legs - a dof issue that is really a non-issue for me here. Yep, watch out for those gators lol!

Unusual photo of a chick that is not common so very nice, and low angle.

David, super cute grab of this little guy. I am enjoying the big, clear eye, happy smile and nice detail you brought out.

I wouldn't mind exchanging a bit below for a touch behind the subject. Also, I might be temped to reduce the luminosity of the bkg a touch.

    Nice to see ya!

As I read your intro my eyes widened! We don't get many alligators in these parts so it's not a hazard I would have to consider! I like the angle and the calling pose, if a 5x4 frame is possible I think it would help.

Hi David, neat image of a Purple Gallinule chick. I don't think I have ever seen on this young. I read your description of the image and how you captured it. Laying down near the waters edge, hmmmm, you are braver than I. The alligator that will get you is the one you do not see, nature's perfect ambush hunter to what comes near the waters edge. Thank you for sharing.

Hi David ... cool capture and I do like walking pose with the open beak .

    If you have a " looser " crop ... would be good , I feel .

Personally I would watch the " yellow greens " .... they do look quite electric .

Hey David, This is an exceptional image. I love you use of the soft, high-key light. Getting rid of the light area on the bottom frame edge would improve this quite a bit.

Is this from a horizontal original??? If not, you are too, too good.

    HI Artie,
This was taken vertically and not that amazing when you consider the R6 grabbed the eye and stuck during this entire sequence as the chick ran for Mom (so I got to concentrate on keeping ahead and I was ready as I expected them to run for mom). There is only a little more all around but less on right side. With the crop, took most off the bottom. Also, I began zooming out in next frame of this 20fps sequence. Framing is much easier with this rig. Thanks to all for valued inputs.
    Peace,
    David

Looks great in high key. The chick really pops on that water. The vertical framing is right on.

I don't care what you say: shooting stuff like this as vertical originals requires some doing so judos to you.

    And YAW.
