Default How low can you go...

The Mossel Bay, South Africa, if there was a contest to see how close you can get your wing the ground this would pretty much be as close as you could get. Picture taken 2 days ago in late afternoon sun

    Wayne:

Excellent low shooting angle, nice touchdown! Like the angle in the frame.

The light was fairly harsh and the background rather busy. I might consider a small crop up from the bottom to reduce the mass effect of all the sand.

    Cheers

Wayne, nice, sharp flight shot. Love the wingtip touch.

The busy background distracts a little for me. Even less desirable is the sunlight angle as it appears it's coming from the rear 1/4 of the subject instead the front 1/4.

Often, it creates a better viewing experience when there is a good bit more room in front than behind. Here, perhaps cropping from the rear and keeping the same proportion above and below would help.

    Great job with the handholding.

Ditto everything above. The breaking wave with mud in it is more than a little distracting. Sharp with a good exposure. The large black shadow and the harsh light made do not help.

I agree with Brian on his points, but love the touching wing tip and nice angle on the bird. The direction of the light was a bit unfortunate.

Hi Wayne, great action of a Kelp Gull flying low over the beach. Well exposed and sharp, and another vote for taking a bit off the bottom.
The one and only time I holidayed in Mossel Bay a few years back, I didnt have many photo opportunities.

    Hey All,

Thanks very much for all the kind words and help to try and make this image better. Took it into LRC and tinkered a little as well as a crop. What do you think, have I gone too far?

repost is an improvement, the harsh light and the busy BG have no solution unfortunately other than trying again, wing touching the beach is neat

Solid view of this gull. Neat how the far wing tip touches the sand.
