Pretty unique, contest entry for something?? I like the FG water...

Sweet open beak pose Brian! Love the all blue FG and BG and even the water ripples. Great job!
Querky fun image but doesn't appeal to me, sorry to say. I like the processing although I think the blacks could possibly reveal a little more detail.
This should be a poster for an endoscopy/gastroscopy suite!
I love the head and the perfectly symmetrical eyes and the flared crown.
A fun image,
Gail
Seriously. That scream within a scream is the stuff of horror films. Amazing capture.
Well captured Brian....this is so different and I like it....The detail on the head is superb and those eyes......How big a crop...I would like to see this with just the head close up, if the IQ holds...

Sump Scores. I am happy to say that this image appeals to me greatly. It is nothing if not spectacular. Getting the eyes sharp requires superb skills (along with great gear). I love the processing think that the blacks could not be more prefect. And the same is true of the whites. It looks perfectly level to me. I'd love to see this as a true 3X2 with the base of the bird's neck centered or close the the center of the frame.
Congrats on creating another truly superb image.
with love, artie

Everyone, thank you very much for your comments!
Jon, sorry you didn't like it. The Western Grebe is very dark gray and black on top and I chose to retain some blacks accordingly instead of washing everything out gray.
Based on suggestions, here are a couple of other looks. I have a personal policy of never cropping below 2500 pix on the shortest side and the headshot does that, but the more vertical RP could be entered into most competitions at 2500< pix on the shortest side.
IQ is just hanging on I think?

Right out of the Book of Revelations!! That or as I mentioned on fb - Google "In the Court of the Crimson King" and look at the striking similarity to the inside of the mouth lol. The original post is much, much stronger and I'd leave it as is. Just a wow factor here!!
Hi Brian ... you are making me envious.
Another KILLER posting with a real WOW factor .... just because of the captured content . Absolutely love it .
Did it happen and you just fired ???
The OP does it for me in terms of cropping and I do like the low POV a lot , paired with lovely processing ..... making this a stunning overall image . Colors looking very very nice ....
As you know I am always looking for options to process things maybe slightly different .... gently.
I said that before ... and I do repeat it with pleasure , your personal signature is very obvious. Keep up your crazy good work , in the field and in the digital darkroom .

hi Brian,
I felt myself an ear nose throat doctor ;)
congratulations.
Looks great to me. Right down the barrel. Love those red eyes. I do prefer the framing in the original frame.
Brilliant image - great bird, something different in the pose and nicely presented
Mike
Yup thats a scary sight and it looks like there is another creature looking out from the back of his throat. Great pic well done
I like the original frame. Very appealing with the red eye.

This is the crop that I was looking for but did not do a very good job of describing, With love, artie
ps: to learn of the ground-level hand holding rear screen technique that Brian used to create this image, see the blog post here.
