Default Back from the dead with a Canyon Wren

No shooting recently for a number of reasons, but I did venture out in pursuit of the Canyon Wren yesterday. They are quite rare here in the Bay Area,
but this guy had been reported south of San Jose by birders for the past two weeks. I was amazed at how cooperative he was with a bit of playback.

This favored perch was initially dotted with poops, so I took a few minutes to scrape those off. Couldn't get everything in the field, so did a bit of clean-up
in the computer when I got home.

Pretty happy with this result given the flat light and relatively slow shutter speed (1/1250). Would have preferred 1/250, but wasn't going to go to 6400
    to get it!

This is my first frame of this species!

    Canon 600mm f/4 IS II + 1.4x III on EOS 1DX2
    1/1250 at f/5.6, ISO 3200.
Processed in LR CC with Topaz Denoise, poop caveat as above.

Sweet shot, Dorian. Great singing pose and HA, detail. Congrats on getting your first shot of the species; one more than I have.

Dorian, welcome back man. Been missing your posts!

First off, congrats on the fruit of your efforts to scout and locate this Wren. A first for me, although they are spotted with some frequency in CO.

Perch, pose, comp and details are all magnificent. I wonder if you did some shadow brush work underneath the subject if it could help enhance it just a bit?

Also, the WB felt just a touch off for me. Might want to take a look at adding a little magenta and see if you like it.

    TFS brother!

How cool, and congrats on your first frame of the species! I love the pattern on the plumage - so subtle at first glance, but so complex when really looking at it. Your work on the rock, both physically and in post, really paid off. Wrens are a family of birds that respond quite well to audio, at least up here, so I am not surprised at the result you experienced here. Nice to see something from you man - always a pleasure to view!

What a beauty Dorian! Love everything here. At first glance I felt it needed to be cropped to just below the tail...but then looking again it's as if he's climbed a huge mountain and calling out "I made it!"

Hi Dorian ... the subject is cool with the open beak and visible tongue taking it even further .

Nice overall image design , albeit I think the perch is very large .... but nothing you can do about .

I would agree with Brian about tone and color .... personal taste .

One other thing I recognized in general , I prefer your " PreTopaz way of sharpening " .... personal taste

Looks very nice in the soft light. A nice pose and killer background as well. Head angle is dead on.

Beautiful. Interesting point Brian made about the pre-topaz way of sharpening..I love the grand rock and the sharp clean Wren on top. If they are anything like our Wrens they start at the bottom and you have to wait and hope that they will finally get there.

DATPA -- ditto all the positives above. Was the shutter speed 1/1250 or 1/125? I suspect the latter ...

Yes, 1/1250. 1/250 woulda been a waste on that vibrating beak!

Thanks Dorian. I was confused by this:

Would have preferred 1/250, but wasn't going to go to 6400

    You must have meant 1/2500.
