Will, this looks like a flipping studio shot. Yowzer!
This perch is the life of the party. Beautiful color on the Redpoll including a touch of lovely iridescence on the head.
Details for days and your composition is impeccable.
In a perfect world you'd probably love to have the even light down into the lower left but man, I'd sure love to have it in my portfolio!

Excellent sharpness and exposure, background certainly compliments the image, well done William.

Hi Brian....with you mentioning studio...flash come into my head....I have never used flash before..but my set up is often well shaded....just wondering if flash was involved, I would get a faster SS...I was at the set up this morning, the fastest SS I could get was 1/2000 with an ISO of 3200 with the sun behind me(wooded area)and I like f/6.3 or f/7.1.......I have missed a few because of the SS being too low...

With setups of perching birds 1/2000s. is definitely not too slow...I regularly get down to 1/200s. and sometimes a touch lower. Fill-flash would not give you much higher SS, if any, as you are still exposing for the ambient light and then just adding some tiny bit of fill. Except for that shaded area, this is very nice. You could opt for a bit more warmth and / or saturation, but your setup is is very appealing.

Hi Dan thanks for the info on the flash....I meant to add that I was missing a few take off poses, because of the SS...yes I agree...sometimes I'm as slow as 1/200 if the light is poor.

For me the color is somehow a " little off " ... for sure a matter of taste .
Just for fun i changed the WB , added a bit of brightness to the " darker tones " and finally a bit of a mid tone boost .
Personally I think your " sharpening" looks a tiny bit too strong in the light parts .... matter of taste .

Thanks for that Andreas......It was a frosty morning, should have mentioned that...but yes, your warmer image does appeal to me as well.

Will ... I just neutralized it with one click in a curves adjustment layer by placing the mid tone eye dropper on the birds brighter plumage close to the tail feathers . Maybe between the OP and my RP ....???
BTW i do find the sharpening in the feral pigeon way better than here ....

Thanks for that Andreas....I recently changed from Unsharp Mask to Smart Sharpen.....Still changing my workflow when I use Topaz DN......But, yes I agree with you sometimes it does look a wee bit aggressive...I find that if there is less of a crop, as the Feral Pigeon was, compared to the 50% crop I use on my set up images, I can be more aggressive on the sharpening...I need to tame it down a wee bit on more cropped images.

Very nice pose and perch. This is one specific species that I would like to photograph one day.
Thanks for sharing

Really like the alert pose and that lichen covered perch. Nice view of the foot gripping the perch.

Hey Will ... not sure if this a " crop related issue" ??!!! I am not sharpening differently on different crop sizes !!
If I get you right ... you sharpen the image three times when using Topaz DN ??
First pass in LR
Second pass in Topaz
Third pass in PS after downsizing
That is a lot , IMHO .

Wow! Really loved the original post for it's simplicity and beauty. The pose of the Redpoll and the lichen on the perch combine for and awesome image.
But then the colour adjustment from Andreas really moved it up a notch for me. Double wow!
