    Green-winged Teal Drake, that is.

After I got a few frames I stopped down to f8 and grabbed more but this was the best pose. Wish I had a bit more dof...

Special thanks to Andreas for the ongoing processing conversations and tips!

Just terrific Brian, colors looking good, i like the tucked in bill while preening. More canvas all around would be a suggestion!

Glad you mentioned it Ann. I actually processed a more traditional version simultaneously as I wasn't sure how the 'boxy' crop would be received.

Had to add a sliver left here and the bottom is the bottom of the raw frame.

    Thank you.

I think you worked the feathers to death... just my opinion but especially the ones in front of beak.

Hi Brian ..... another " Sump" , albeit not flying .
Love to dive into those fine rendered details .... created with lots of care and a gentle hand . Very nicely done !!! Colors can be discussed ... if they have to be " in your face " , but I like it in this image .
You making good progress in terms of processing , my friend , remember your beginning .... not that long ago .
I am with Ann about the framing , your RP is better ... still think more room needed , see my version as an example . But this is just personal preference .

Brillant work ... man all those details .... love your killer instinct

Hi Brian, I really like the feathers, the preening pose, colors, etc. My only nit was the crop but the repost addresses that well. Nicely done as usual!

    Lovely!
I would love more room on the right. I always like a bit of room for the bird's head when he finishes preening!

Brian....The only thing I was really good at when at school was Art.......When I picked up a camera...all I wanted to do was create Art.....I chose birds as my subjects, as wildlife was also a big part of me, and getting good photographs of these subjects is all I wanted to do.....I discovered that getting these good photos wasn't easy. in fact it was difficult.....But I loved it.......On this image, you have not 'worked the feathers to death' ...what you have created is a photograph that shows the feather detail at it's best....you have stepped up here and created a beautiful image...This is now what people want to see..especially me....I love it, and for detail, colours and well I can go on, this is one of your best.......In my eyes...perfect.

    Great work

Ann, always thankful for your comments. They have great merit and, as mentioned, I especially valued the cropping comment!

Dan, what does this mean? I didn't isolate any feathers on this subject when processing except dodging the right edge down to underneath where the shadow was and a slight lift to the blacks near the rump in LR. \

Everything was done using curves, exp and a little contrast in selective color as well as channel blending. What you see is how God made this one.... not the work of my PS brush...

Andreas, as I said my friend you have been a wonderful resource. And thank you for your comments about the care I take on these. I spend WAYYY more time than most people but I do truly desire to make each one as good as I can.

    Thank you again!!

Kurt, very much appreciated. Your comments on the crop are certainly noted. BTW, let's see some more of those killer shots you've been getting down in AZ!

    Gail, super appreciated thank you.

May I ask, how would that translate to this crop in your opinion? I originally tried it centered but it felt like it needed more left as it was point that direction. Would I move it potentially back to where the eye is more in the middle of the frame?

Will, one of the most meaningful replies I've ever received. Man, I think you nailed exactly how I feel about photography, which is why I fell in love with it. I've got a long way to go but when someone like yourself sees and appreciates what is created it keeps me going for sure.

Couldn't me more stoked to hear your praises. Thank you my friend, truly!

Brian, I am obviously an outlier but the feathers around the beak do not look sharp to me, they look muddy and I am on big screen..
I am wrong I guess if no one else sees it.
At 1/2500 I expect they would be more defined and sharper.
    Not a personal attack.

Whoa check out all the details. Colours jump off the screen too. The textures in the water are fun. Pretty much everything is perfect - except one minor improvement if I may: I wish for a bit more room below. The reason why is that the top of the reflected perch is just skimming the bottom edge - some space below it would give the comp some breathing room below. Such a great frame though with a stunning preening pose.

As I said earlier Brian just off the charts. Look at all the positive comments. Details all the way down to the toes. Just a beauty not much else to say other than I wish it were mine. TFS

Daniel, very valuable point. The bottom here was the bottom in the raw. However, I do have several more frames with more room for a later time. Thank you!

Hey Brian. I am confused by your post. You are not supposed to be posting photos of perched, static ducks. Just flying ducks please. IAC, this is superb. The feathers and sharpness and details are superb. The colors are superb. The pose is great. It looks as if he might have gotten hit in the front of the head by a heavy duty pipe wrench.

I hated the boxy crop. The repost is somewhat better but not perfect: several folks wished for more room on our right, for me, the one needs a lot more room on our left. In addition to more below as suggested by Mr. Cadieux. In other words, I'd prefer the bird more to our right in the original frame as the bird is looking to our left. So that is where I want the room. Putting the TC in your pocket might have been a great choice especially considering that you do not mind cropping ...

    Hola amigo!

Lol, well first off thank you for the compliments! Come to realize crop is one of the most contested points on BPN threads and also one of the most subjective aspects of a photo. I do desire to make the final as pleasing as possible but just read above and notice the varying viewpoints. Your points are valid to me.

As far as the flight shots haha, go back and look at my posts from May-Oct and I bet it's a 4/1 ratio of perched to flight. Maybe not quite that, but this time of year there's just not as much on perches as spring-fall.
