    Default Theme Horned Grebe

    Horned Grebe taken March 2020. Was nestled into rocks on shore capturing Hooded Mergansers eating crawdads when this Horned Grebe surfaced just about at my minimum focusing distance.

    Nikon D500 500mm f/4
    1/4000, f6.3 ISO 560 - .67 exp comp 500mm with 1.4 Teleconverter

    ACR for WB, PS to crop out back end of bird which is out of focus.

    Vaughn, great to see you posting my friend!

    So yeah, this is about as close up to a Horned Grebe as I've seen. Lots of striking components such as the patterning in the iris of the eye and the striations in the beak. And if he had any nose hairs, by God we'd see them here...

    I actually quite like the blue and neutral introductions in the bkg.

    Only a couple thoughts - one, did you have any more room to the right? It would be nice to give him some room looking that way. And second, feels like maybe some of the grainer areas in the plumage and the bkg might benefit from a little noise reduction.

    Brian and David thanks for the comments, much appreciated. I do see the graininess, missed it during my edits. Will give these a try.
