An American White Pelican taken yesterday on the Deschute river in central Oregon.
Although they may be common elsewhere, they only winter in Oregon and the Deschutes is
the farthest north and west in the winter range which is a 2 hour drive from me.
They very rarely get over the Cascade range.
This beautiful bird is a goner with this wing, I saw it the week before and it was fine.
There are just 6 pelicans wintering at the mouth of the Deschutes, a family perhaps.
D500, 500mm (300 f2.8 w 1/7tc) f5.6, 1/1600, iso100, 90% of FF.
I do not think I have taken bird photo ever at iso 100 until this one. brokewingbpn.jpg
Beautiful lighting, exposure, and detail, Dan. Great view of that big beak, and the low angle really makes him pop. Wing is a bummer but is offset by the gentle pink tone to the surrounds.
