Hi all, I've been absent due to family vacation which means less time for wildlife photography (unless you count grandkids):D I've discovered that I'm taking better family shots because of what I've learned here, so thanks, everyone. Here's one from March, as always, C&C appreciated.

    Canon 40D; Av f5.6, eval -2/3; 1/3200; ISO 200; 100-400 @190mm

Hi Katie Good point regarding the family photography All principles apply Working on one type will elevate the other ....... and grand kids do count as wildlife

This is one impressive portrait High impact !!! I like the look as presented but not sure why the head area looks painted? You also managed to reproduce one amazing eye !!!! Big Congrats !!!!

Great composition, portrait and BG. I might sharpen the bird a bit less.

First rate job Katie! Exposure looks good, as does feather detail. The eye really draws your attention, but it looks a little oversharpened to me. Overall a very good photo!

Thank you, all. I almost deleted this because of the shadow under his beak (upper breast). Glad I didn't!

Very dramatic. If the eye is over-sharpened, it is just a tad. That eye-ring in breeding plumage really stands out.
