Definitely a 'marmite' image for sure, but when you are faced with biblical flocks of Kittiwakes(?) what do you do, how would you shoot this situation?????

Whilst crossing through a very narrow channel in the Svalbard archipelago there is a location where there are over seven whirl pools providing a superb and rich feeding ground for the sea birds. If you ever have a fear of birds then this would not be the place for you. Traveling in a zodiac it was testing at times where the speed of the water was matching our speed and so often we found ourselves almost stationary surrounded by these massive flocks.

Probably could loose about an inch off the foot, but quite liked the RoT's.

Thanks to those who posted or viewed on the last posting.

How would I shoot this situation?
I would try to (and likely fail at) isolating a bird or two against the darker bg and get the typical BIF shoot.
I hate knowing that I'd have such a formulaic approach and that I wouldn't step out of the box to look for more creative options.
So kudos to you for trying.

That said, I'm not a fan of marmite :)

For this blur to have worked for me, you'd have to step much farther back to get the whole 'biblical flock' more tightly knit together, and so as to render a more painterly/uniform bg.

    Happy New Year, Steve!!

I too am very predictable in my approach and composition, so I appreciate the attempt at something different. I really like the top part of the frame, the bit backed by land. I think that part of the frame works the best. The lower part, where birds are closer and better defined, is too muddled for me.

    Doing well, Steve!
Mostly living under a rock as far as photography goes for the last 4+ years, unfortunately.
Hope to fix that in 2021.

Your description of the travel on a zodiac sounds amazing. That and your superb PB images make me want to get to Svalbard.

Sorry to hear that Sidharth, sounds like what we are currently experiencing with CV-19 and lockdown, however I do hope it doesn’t extend to 4 years, albeit at times it might feel ike it. Glad to hear that things will change for you in 2021 and you can get out and start snapping and sharing your images.

Zodiac travel is fun, but long periods out, you do get very cold if there is a wind chill, but everyone one board has to work as a team and if folk want to move you have to ask, nothing like rocking the boat!!!! Thanks for the kind comment re PB, if you ever are thinking of heading to Svalbard let me know, it was the fourth trip there and by now I know what you need and not need.

    All the best
