    Default Snowy Owl

    Attached Images Attached Images

Back in the winter of 2017, down the Jersey shore, this was one of many captured images of my first sighting of a Snowy with patches of snow in the sand dunes. Here, just before sunset, I captured a pause in the middle of a grooming session. C&C welcome.

Hi Geoffrey I think cool to find a snowy in close range .
Really nice warm light and you handled the side light quite nice . I am ok with the busy grass just wish some stems would not have been there , but nothing you could have done .
Nice sharpness , not sure about the central placement of the owl ... if you have the space move the crop to the left might look more pleasing .
Another round of NR to the BG would help the image I think .

Lovely Geoffrey, do you have any more to the LHS, if so I might move the whole frame left, so less to the RHS (say half currently, but judge by eye) so more to look into? Running some simple NR over the top third may help smooth out some graininess, doesn't worry me, but it might others... Glad you kept the eye clear of the grass.

Seems the two replies over lapped.

Yes, I remember that spot and the beautiful light just before sunset on the beach. What fun. The previous two posts failed to notice that this was full-frame, so you obviously don't have more room to the left. I think this is lovely as posted, although I could also imagine a version with something other than a 3:2 presentation -- maybe crop some from the right, about to where the G in Geoffrey is. (Or the C in Cleveland)

I will be the odd woman out and say that I quite like the crop. The owl's face is turned enough towards us that you do not need as much room on the right or left.
Beautiful light and the grasses and sand and snow are really nice.
My biggest bug-a-boo is the grass across the face. It would be super easy to clone that out with the spot healing tool in PS.
    Well done,
    Gail

I like the setting with the owl in the grasses on the dune. The light was nice.

Geoffrey, such a beautiful frame. There's certainly some envy attached to it, I can assure you :-)

What I do like about the comp is getting all the grasses contained at top. That is nice. Just enough room at bottom to show the snow, also great.

The only drawback I can see is the grass across the face. Slight lower, and no prob at all. Oh, and I do like the idea of a little NR at the top third by Steve.

    TFS.

The grass across the face was pretty much unavoidable, so I can live with it. I do wish the eye was sunlit though, but the light angle made that almost impossible here. I love the habitat, the vegetation, the light quality (but not the angle of it as much). Snowy Owls are always thrilling...you must have had fun photographing it!
