Spotted this beauty preening under a small pond apple on a drizzly morning. Got down to belly to get close as the preening continued.

Beautiful bird whites look good with detail. I like that you didn't remove the down off the bill. Just wondering why f/11 I would have tried 7.1 8.0 and maybe got the background softer. The highlights in the background are somewhat distracting. TFS

The soft light brang out the detail nicely. I like the pose and the framing.

Fine detail and pose you managed. I personally like the choice of f/11 here. You were obviously close to the subject and f/7.1 or 8 would have not been enough DOF for your subject at that range.

David, I have come back to this one a couple times and each time I love the detail and colors but this side of the face just feels dark to me.

Excellent job covering dof on this one, but I just wonder if bringing a little lift in luminosity to the head and/or eye area could help? Was it underexposed at all?

Hi Brian, First, loving that harrier series and can't wait for more. It was an overcast, drizzly grey morning with slightly brighter light coming from right of frame (the east) and this beauty was in the shade of a pond apple (to the left) and the very boardwalk I was laying on. It was actually ETTR to the max as I had Steve in my head and went a little further than histogram said I could. As usual, Steve has been right and when I think I've blown some highlights they always recover. As in this case, the forehead/top looked blown out of camera but details were recovered as I nudged the exposure to the left in DPP. So yes, even though light was multidirectional and soft, the face was in the shade. I tried lightening and preferred the natural soft light and shadow look on this one. I did very subtly raise the eye only. Thanks as always for your very valued help, my friend...
