Default R5- so far so good!

    Attached Images Attached Images

I got my R5 last week. It was a frustrating few days getting used to it- lots of swear words and unladylike behavior at times!
So far, I like it. I prefer the feel of my 1 DX3. It is sturdier and heftier and fits my hands better but that will probably change once I get the battery grip for the R5.
Right now, the R5 feels like a 5D MK IV.
IQ is about the same as my 1DX3 with perhaps a slight edge to the 1 Dx3 files. It has been so dark and gloomy here that my lowest ISO has been 1600 and my F stop has not been higher than 5.6. That may be some of the reason for the perceived loss of IQ.
The Animal Eye detect is really good. Not 100% but pretty impressive. I can't wait to try it with ducks and herons moving around in the water, turning their heads side to side. The R5 will be a game changer for these types of situations. No more using the joystick to get the AF point on the moving eye/head.
For this image, I did not have eye detect on (I was clumsy getting the button pressed down) but the spot AF worked fine!
    R5, 600mm
    ISO 1600 SS 1/1600 f 5.0
Cropped to 80% FF . Nothing added or cloned.
Still learning the PP on this. DPP is definitely better for proper color rendition.
Comments and critiques always appreciated and learned from with thanks,
    Gail

Love the take-off pose Gail and great timing, those are not easy to get. IQ looks great to me. I had the same problem adjusting to my A9ii coming from a 1dxm2. I did get the battery grip and it made a huge difference in feel. I am betting the canon grip will do the same for you. Looking forward to seeing your images using the R5.

Hi Gail, any rig in your hands will perform just fine. Love the BG, perch, pose and your usual, always exceptional, IQ. Sharp right where it needs to be. Yep, I think you'll be fine with BG. Your gonna need it as these are battery hogs. Can't wait for more... TFS

I agree with David that any rig in your hands will produce excellent images! I like the take-off pose, sharpness, perch and BG.

Just proves once again that it's not the camera, but the person behind it that matters. Stunning shot. Love the flight pose and BG. Looking forward to more.

Looks alive! Looks good, I cannot tell equipment, the IQ is as nice as all your work.
I would clone out the rain drops or specks and I would personally use the healing brush to make
    the BG even better.

Gail, congrats on the new rig! Great to see you getting some runs with it and this one is a beauty.

Recognize the perch, which is interesting and to get the take off sharp has to feel nice. Not a terribly easy shot to get IMO.

Background nice too, love the color spots above.

    Look forward to more!

nice take off frame Gail, you got the peak of take off. and you got lucky it was sharp enough at 1/1600 sec. In a perfect would far wing would have just cleared the dead flowers. When I had the 1DX series cameras I could easily pull off shots at ISO-3200 so I am surprised you chose 1600.

Looks good Gail, though I would echo Arash's comment, when I had gone for 1/1600 sec in similar circumstances I frequently wished it had been 1/3200.

Hi Gail, well timed for the take off, and I like outspread wings. Lovely sharp detail, colours look good, and I really like the overall IQ in this. The colours of the BG compliment the Grosbeak nicely.

Beautiful take off capture, Gail. Like the overcast light quality, and the fine detail where it needs to be. Glad you're liking the new gear.

    Hi Arash,
This was with my R5 and only the second time out with the rig.
I agree I got lucky to get this sharp at 1/1600. I was just testing out various ISO's and this was my starting point on this day. The R5 seems to be good at ISO 2000 and 2500 but have not gone higher yet. A work in progress!

I am now away to delete my recent Evening Grosbeak images, as well as throw away my 7DII...thanks a lot Gail!

Seriously though, excellent image. I love the delicate perch, and the one leaf still on it among the cones. Nice BG too. It's been a fun enough winter so far in eastern parts of Canada, let's hope things keep up!

Dan, the R6 would suit you to a tee, it does everything you need and more, and the best bit - it’s cheaper, better ISO and with the adapter ring you can use your EF lenses which are just as good and occasionally better. But go for the version where you can add customs functions, it’s a nice addition.

Dan, with your love of the 7DMKII, you might like to wait for the R7 which is apparently along the lines of your current body and alleged to be mid ‘21??
