Super nice alert pose, like the raised foot as both hidden in kelp would have hurt the image... Sharp, clean, and BG is lovely to offset the interesting kelp. Well done!

Love the light and shadows in this one. The pose, base of kelp and the dreamy BG. Minor nit is the underside whites. Perhaps it was the light but they vary from darker splotches to the area just under the wing that lacks detail. I love this canvas (no surprise there) as is though. TFS

    ps
    That BG transition...

Good observation David and I noticed the same thing. The whites were not blown in the RAW (236) so I did reduce the highlights but still bright. The blotchy spot is in the RAW and not caused by aggressive highlight reduction. Will see if using a luminosity mask works better.
    Thanks,

So here is my redo using a luminosity mask and not using highlight slider in LR. Also removed the extra catchlight in the eye. Better?
I think there is a subtle improvement on the whites.
    The darker splotches are natural.

Great alert pose. Love the light, the POV, the raised foot, the BG. And the kelp adds interest. Nicely done.

Hi Gail, nice sandpiper image. I like the alert pose and the raised leg, also the kelp is intersting (I have not seen any kelp in a long time). On my display the whites in the original posting I think look better. I have a couple questions regarding your comments on the repost. When you used the Highlight slider in LR was it globally or was it locally using the Adjustment Brush in LR? When you used the Luminosity mask was in in Photoshop or in LR using the Adjustment Brush? Thank you for sharing, someday I might get back to Nova Scotia.

A fine shot Gail, love the pose, the BG and the head angle. The raised foot is an added bonus. RP is even better.

    Gail, well isn't this lovely!

Not much to add but as mentioned, subject looks fantastic with great contrast and detail. I prefer your op much more but sig looks better in the second

The kelp (?) at bottom adds great interest.

Nice frame of this sandpiper. I like all that seaweed and the raised foot is nice as well. Framing is right on. Nice light as well.

    Hi Joe,
In LR, I use the highlight slider with the adjustment brush although sometimes I like the result on a specific area better with the global adjustment. It seems that the global adjustment does not gray out whites as much as the adjustment brush does (sometimes).
And I use the luminosity mask in Photoshop.

Boy, I am missing those fresh juvenile plumage shorebirds and this spectacular image makes me miss them even more. Both look great too me but I believe that the WHITES in the repost are a bit better. I think. The raised foot is mega!
