A couple of weeks ago I was photographing Waders from the rocks on the shore at a small village named Elie, about 10 miles from my hometown...I noticed this Grey/Common Seal bobbing its head up, and diving, then getting closer to me....I think out of curiosity ...He/She got real close and I managed a few shots. Handheld. ACR and PS2020

Up close indeed William, the inquisitive nature of these guys really shows through here, is that a selfie in the eyeball I see.

Overall image quality and DOF look pretty good here. might look at cropping a small portion off the bottom for mine, but not a big deal.

Hi Will, agree with Marc about the inquisitive aspect, but for me, the low SS again is letting the side down, also one of the Highland deer also posted, suffered too from this too.

I'm not sure why you are hesitant in pushing the ISO, it's a 1DX MKII, but critical sharpness and definition around the eye I feel is lacking and so, with any movement of either the seal and or you will not deliver a crisp file. In addition, the head is slightly angled and you can see how the DoF tails off quickly.

Sorry Will, but I just feel you are missing a trick here, also you may want to review the 'Case' used too?

What nostrils this seal has. I like the framing. It works well with the seal dead center. The catchlight in the eye looks pretty neat.

    Hello Will,

Sweet little chap, pose is great and so is composition but I feel more DoF needed here and since you were shooting handheld, more SS too

    Kind regards,

Or does it need less DoF, say f/6.3, what was the distance to the subject Will, would you say?

Thanks Will, I would have said less DoF, but you have the 2x on so I guess it defaults to f/8?
