Default Oriental Honey Buzzard (from Canon 800mm)

    Hi All,

This is my first posting in this forum. Wanted to open my account here with an image from my new Canon 800mm shot during the weekend.

Canon 800mm + 1.4xII on Canon 1D Mark III - Shot from vehicle using beanbag.
ISO 200, 1/200 @ f8. Had over exposed by 1 2/3 stop by mistake. recovered in ACR.

    Regards,
    Sudhir

Welcome Sudhir, and that is an amazing capture with your new lens. Congratulations and looking forward to more please. With the 1.4II extender, did the lens hunt much with the focussing or was it fast and snapped to it?

Thanks for the warm welcome Phil. If the focusing distance range selection switch is in 6m-infinity, then it does hunt a bit and it's slow. But when shooting in 20m-infinity, it's definitely fast.

Lucky you! And congrats on a nice first image! I'm interested in your impressions of the new big dog from Canon.

Thanks Doug. I have been shooting mostly birds with my previous Canon 500mm. I was always falling short of the reach as the birds here are very shy. And most of the time, I used to end up cropping the image. But with the 800 + 1.4x combination, the reach is amazing and the colours/sharpness out of the box is great. I am average built (5'5" ft tall and weighing 63kg) and can easily run behind the birds hand holding the lens (which I did during the weekend). Of course, one disadvantage I faced is the composition in heavy winds.

I am going out again this weekend and hope to get more info on its performance.

    Rgds,
    Sudhir
