My first post, so go easy on me :)

Young Baltimore Oriole baited with orange (obviously) in my backyard. Captured with a Canon EOS R and Canon 500 F/4L IS ("old five") + 1.4x III mounted on an Induro tripod/gimbal head while hiding inside my car in the driveway. 1/400, f/5.6 at ISO 1600. Postprocessed in Topaz DeNoise AI and Lightroom. Bird in the shade, background in the sun. Critique is most welcome.

The bird is sharp and the pose is great. But the metal hook and the orange are less than desirable.

Try setting up a natural perch and put the orange on a stiff piece of wire (like a coat hanger) below the perch just within reach of the bird. The bird will land on the perch. While it tries to figure out how to get at the orange you can get some good shots without the orange or the wire in the frame. In addition, you might wish to move your set-up to avoid the specular highlights in the background.

Was the BKGR lit by the sun with the subject in the shade?

Hi, Artie. Thanks for your input. Great suggestion - I will try a natural perch next time. Would your opinion change about the orange and the wire if the goal was to capture "bird at feeders"?

Are specular highlights generally not desirable as a background? I was specifically aiming for it and positioned myself accordingly to capture a bush that was lit by the sun. And yes, the BKGR was lit by the sun and the bird was in the shade.

The pose on the bird is nice. Birds in shade and background in sun can make for some dramatic images.

    Welcome to BPN Muhammad!!

Great bird and pose, a bit of a bluish cast that should be easy to fix. Interesting to see the molting plumage - pretty neat. Exposure and sharpness both look great. Another option to placing the orange would be to do so above the bird, this way you'll have more "upright" poses rather than leaning down. You can experiment with both methods and collect a nice variety of images.

A good start, looking forward tomore!

Thanks. I just posted another example of bird in the shade, BKGR in the sun. Hope it is dramatic :)

Thank you. Good point about the blue cast. I'll fix it.
