This last April I was out at Loxahatchee on a dismal, drizzly afternoon. I was half way down the berm on one of the retention wetlands trying to image some egrets on the flats above this frame. I heard the rustle of something bigger coming my way as my eye was to the viewfinder. Took the camera down, thinking possible alligator. Was immediately met by this gaze from out of the purple pickerel. I was struck by the lighter head and neck and remembered there is another morph from down south (mostly keys) and grabbed this frame. I was a little above and within ~ 9 meters. So, went vertical and cut the legs mid thigh. As it was dreary, the lighter head popped against the dark saturated greens of the pickerel. Got home and researched the morph and indeed there is a morph, usually down south called Wurdermann with lighter head and neck. They usually do not have the dark feathers on head but this beauty had the correct marking of a shorter, thicker bill and shorter white head plume (just seen here) which they share with the white morph.

Thanks as always for valued comments on previous posts. Please keep them coming.

David, habitat shots certainly have merit where they are not a standard smooth/even bkg frame with focus on the subject. However the lack of eye contact specifically makes this one less desirable (for me at least) than some of your other recents.

    TFS.
