    Default Great Frigatebird

For the month's theme I had to dig really deep into my archives for this one. Taken from a zodiac off the shore of North Seymour Island in the Galapagos in 2010, with my early D90. Even ten years ago I knew that shooting black birds in the equatorial sunshine was not ideal, but what are you going to do when the bird flies low over your boat? So close, in fact that I didn't zoom out fast enough, and clipped a wingtip. This is more than full width, with canvas added both sides, plus a bit of wingtip repair.

    D90, VR80-400 (the old one) @98mm; ISO 400, 1/2000s @ f/7.1.

oldie but goodie, I like the view of the deflated pouch, clouds in the BG are nice too. the under wing details are lacking a bit from the modest equipment you were using back then...

The clouds are great. Image quality doesn't looks too bad considering everything. I saw one of these at De Soto once.

Bill, coulda fooled me on the wingtip. Nice work.

The subject looks a bit hazy here; perhaps due to lifting shadows? I sense a touch of green tint as well in the blacks.

    Really cool bird though!

I would sharpen the eye a bit more and like the red colors in the frame.
    Clouds are very nice.

Good Photoshop work. You did well with a tough subject in full sun. Galapagos trips are really hurting ... At best. i am trying to put one together for JULY?AUG 2021 but who knows?

Thank you all. Yes, the details are a bit lacking because of lifting the shadows on the sunlit black bird, and the "ancient" equipment.

Brian, the green in the scapular area is a signature aspect of the male Frigatebird's plumage. There may also be a hint of green elsewhere.

Artie, I hope you are able to put your trip together. Galapagos is magical - a must trip for every lover of nature and especially bird photography, at least once in a lifetime and preferably more.
