My last post was of the very same bird, but with a more impressive and larger prey item. But I was not super happy about the oof body as the back was turned towards me. I mentioned hoping for it turning around the other way, which it did not that time, but here it was exactly the way I was hoping. A bit less impressive prey, but still cool and colourful. Man-o-man that was a fun subject, with all kinds of fun surprises in its bill as they kept busy showing up with food for the young. With the sun sun shing ncely on the flycatcher, I had to lower the exposure to avoid blowing out some of the feathers - this is what rendered the shaded background as a black backdrop (what Artie would call a "blackground").

    Canon 7DII + 500mm f/4 II + 1.4TC III, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/640s., f/10, ISO 800, natural light, handheld, about 85% FF.

Another stunner that pops off that shaded BG. I still love the first post better as it has better view, and lighting on both eyes (prey and bird). Cool series, hope you have more. TFS

I am liking the series. Super sharp with another nice insect. Great blackground.

I agree. I like the "blackgrounds", especially with a bird with much white or yellow. The dragonfly wings get a little lost but I can live with that.

    Daniel:

What a wonderful opportunity you had here, and you made the most of it. Pose def. more DOF friendly, like the subtle color variations in the birds feathers,

I do prefer the slightly lighter, green background of the previous shot, but understand the tradeoffs you had to make. Where did you get all the dragonflies that you were feeding them? Just kidding of course !

    Cheers

Man i like this one even more than the previous. That dark background makes the bird really pop. The dragonfly is killer of course. Nice one.
