I captured this one last week, in my hometown...It was quite a windy day, and the sea was stormy..so I went to where the colony of seals are, and managed a few 'different' shots, this being one of them.

Love all that splashing water. The seal works very well small in the frame. Nice eye contact as well.

Hi Will, I know why f/8, but how much of a crop is this with the 2x?

I quite like the off set position of the subject and the crashing waves, but overall it just looks a bit flat, getting more tonal range within the whole frame (which there is) creates some nice depth and gives substance to the sea/waves.

Hi Steve...not much of a crop..about 20% cropped off. I was ETTR on the seals, whilst they were perched on the rocks..but never changed the exposure for this shot....I over exposed the shot, but not blown..Here is a screenshot of the RAW....I did use DE on the wave in an effort to get more detail.

Hi Will, OK, just thought as most of your images are for social media you Ould have shot with the 1.4, f/5.6 and cropped. With the waves 1/2500 easily and froze the water, ISO isn't an issue, even with the set up you had.

I over exposed the shot, but not blown..
You have a whole stop to play with.

.I did use DE on the wave in an effort to get more detail.
Will it's a programme that had it's day, PS Curves, or luminosity, or both, far better, image looks better and you can do much more. Will, OTT as it's on the laptop, but..

Will, all I'm trying to show is that you have it there, I can't add in something that is not there and DE will NOT do it.

Interesting image Will. I liked the small in frame subject against the crashing waves , haven’t seen such Seal images here at BPN. Steve’s RP has improved things considerably and shows the way. More often than not , the image is well captured but small things like techs on field and subtle changes in PP makes the difference on the final outcome.

    TFS.

Will - good idea for a slightly different presentation. The seal does look a little lost but I suppose that was the intention to some extent, I feel if he was less central it would offer more opportunities in terms of negative space and minimalism concepts.

Hey I got moaned at for using Nik filters a while back too! I don't use them any more, as Steve said you can do similar in PS......... and it's your own work too

For me, the subject is too centered. And I would have loved to have seen the top of the waved in the frame. That leads me to think that a vertical original might have been great (though I would never have thought of that in the moment)>
