Taken this morning in Eastern Oregon waiting for good light to
photo other birds on the Deschutes River.
Not a big favorite bird, maybe not too many flight shots so here it is.
D500, 500mm (300 f2.8 w/1.7), f4.8, 1/2000, iso10,000
I upped the limit on my auto iso.
Shot a +0.7
Dan, not sure if I'm looking at this right but the bird looks sculpted like clay and there are white dots on the face that look like noise or artifacts?
The most remarkable thing for me is that you could achieve focus on a black bird flying straight at you in pretty poor light. Kudos to you and the D500.
I like the intense stare, full wings down, soft background.
I have not been happy with the D500 pushed this high on the ISO, but I would have tried the shot too!
The noise is still pretty noticeable in the darkest areas, esp. under the chin, There is also some smoothing from the NR. I am curious what your noise reduction process is?
The pose, action, comp and BG all look fine, but its' the processing on this particular image that needs a bit more refining, especially the face. We don't see this species posted much at all, let alone in flight!
Thanks for the comments,
Obviously at iso10000 in a crop sensor consumer camera
the IQ would not be terrific, but you have to try stuff.
I shoot everyday with some friends and when we meet and something
is flying around we shoot no matter the light.
I shot this 1 stop over and thought it looked OK, NR was applied everywhere
except the face.
Nothing else was sharp anyway.
I posted it because of the species. Not many bother with a Brewers Blackbird.
