    Default Barn Swallow Backboard

Caught this Barn Swallow sitting on the top of an old basketball backboard. Sun hit its face just right and I got a good head position.

Super close with the 500mm left little crop necessary. I did bring it in about 10-15% to hide some brackets in lower LH and RH corners.

I know the backboard is a little overwhelming but I didn't have a lot of options to crop with the tail going down right so far.

    Nikon D500
    Sigma 500mm F4
    Handheld

    ISO 110
    f4
    1/3200

Edited in C1P (Added about 10 structure and clarity and mild sharpen)
In PS, crop and some dodging

Looks a bit like the Australian Welcome Swallow.
Bird looks good, but pity about the dominant/artificial perch.

Perch is awful, bird is nice in harsh light.
This site can be brutal. You can take it I hope.

Hi Brian ... nice subject , perch is what it is !! Do not mind that much .
Personally I think it is over sharpened and is carrying too much blacks and contrast .
If you sharpen mild ... wonder where it is coming from . Just taking your C1 edits as described .... you sharpened the image three times ( only in C1 ) as structure/clarity and sharpen !!! As all are sharpening tools using different radius for their work , targeting different frequencies . Depending on the used values ... it can be unfortunate for the image .

Just to give you an idea on my usage of those three tool , sharpening 250/0.3/0.6-1 , structure never touch it , clarity ( natural) 5-10 never higher and only locally via brushing . Just my WF .... not saying anyone needs to copy them

I get the impression the image was underexposed, it looks rather heavy, I also agree with previous observation relating to over sharpening. I would suggest lift exposure, reduce contrast and reduce sharpening.

It was about 3/4 stop underexposed but I lifted it in C1P. Do you suggest I [ever] go beyond 0 with exposure?

Also, I had reduced contrast originally, can go more?

Of course Andreas, I highly value your opinions and WF :-)

I obviously need to better understand the sharpening process. My understanding from Ari and others was to globally sharpen in C1P and then sharpening again with smart sharpen in PS was recommended? I did the latter as well, think I left it out.

Here were my C1P settings. I was only 10 clarity and 10 structure:

Here is one with NO sharpening in PS, only C1P sharpening /clarity 10/ structure 10

    Judge yourself !!!!!!!

    Leave structure alone !!!!

And you need to sharpen in PS .... after downsizing , before saving the file

I really like the detail you captured on the bird...but looks too contrasty here (iMac)...A different perch and this would be a very nice image.

An interesting perch for sure. Like the framing and the light.
