Not a huge fan of such square canvases, but the large perch required it here. As for the roots, I agree with leaving them. If you wanted them gone, then you shoulda done
it in the field as set-ups give you the change to get everything perfect. Doing it after the fact wold feel really cheap to me. Detail and exposure on bird look pretty good,
and I really like the head angle and composition with him gazing into space.

I don't mind the crop, but the perch, although nice, is pretty dominant.
    The bird looks good.

Colours look very good but the image is too tall to fit on my 27" monitor. I am afraid I do not see the benefit of posting images this tall ..... what am I missing????

Hi Kevin, which way was the shot taken, Portrait or Landscape?

I don't mind the square format, but can't help feel that going Landscape would offer a better option, even if there was some green expanse to the RHS. Depending on the EV you might have squeezed a tad more SS and could have easily gone to 3200. Overall the colour, detail and tonal range is getting better, but if the log is on the same plane of focus, why does it lack detail, has NI been applied? In addition, where the focus point was placed within the AF area you may find that as it moves 'out' there is a fraction of sharpness drop off, plus were you using Single point AF rather than a 'cluster' AF Expansion, or Large zone AF, as Single with offer greater accuracy and no time lag. For me the roots go, too distracting and they don't add anything to the capture.

Steve landscape lots of empty space to the right and neat image was applied . Single point on the head just a little below the eye and to the left.

Then try a landscape version. My rule has always been, get the shot you want, then if time allows then look at other options ie format, tight, wide... NR, if required, then apply only to the BKG.

Single point fine, or even the cross, if it helped.

Love the bird, love the stump. Great flora and fauna image. Color , details and BG spot on. Agree with more to the right to allow for less dominant stump (which I love). TFS

Hi Kevin ... I like this one .
Do not mind the crop .
But I would have edited differently from my POV .... going brighter and lower contrast in the dominant perch ( due to its nature being dark ) and go darker in the lighter parts of the bird ( keeping it natural ) . But everything with a gentle hand and through various luminosity masks and layers ....

And important as well ... your file has no embedded color profile .

Hi Kevin, beautiful bird that I don't recall seeing before. Exposure and colors on the bird look good. I think I may have cropped the image differently but would have to see what is in the master file. Thank you for sharing.

Sharp with a good exposure and a butt-ugly perch. Yuo need to take more care when selecting. Weathered vertical trunks "planted" in a hole work well with tiny bits of peanut butter in the crevices ...

Nice view of this woodpecker. Like the view of the tail as well. I don't mind the perch. Solid background.
