I like the landing pose, it does have paintary look and lack of detail coming from the high ISO and NR smoothing. I wish the near wing was a in a better position. good exposure. A snapshot maybe but it doesn't really work for me as an avian photo if you want my honest opinion, there isn't much of a story that I can see or something that can attract viewer's interest at least for me. Maybe try to get him fishing, some nesting material, something to spice it up a bit

Looks great for ISO 20,000! I have not pushed my 1DX3 that far yet!
I am OK with wing position.
Head looks odd because of the noise reduction.
You have inspired me to try higher ISO's!

I think you could get better quality than this Colin, I had the Mk1 and I could get good results of bison at higher ISO, I would suggest have another look at the raw, then just repeat to yourself less is more as you adjust the sliders.

The detail in the wings is nice, but I agree with Arash about this looking like a walk around snapshot versus a deliberately pursued and composed photograph. My feeling is that you may as well stay home if you have to shoot at ISO 20,000. Just wait for better light.

Hi Colin ... where was the FP ???

Not sure what other folks see , I do not think it looks like walk around shot in general . It has it shortcomings for sure ... for me it is too tight and the FG is somehow distracting , not much you can do about that .

The image is not showing fine detail nor does it show the sharpness I would expect from the 1Dx III ... all said that looking at my screen . The wings and other parts of the bird are very smooth and other parts like the bill/face are showing noise or the artifacts . The BG still showing noise .... the 1Dx should perform better . Maybe the image was not ideally exposed to handle the noise .
Iso 20.000 should be no problem at all .... if well exposed .

Like the pose and the white bird against that dark water.

So I posted this because I was really surprised at the potential for really high iso shots, not because I thought it was a great image. I take you back to my early wildlife photography days when it was all film and iso (asa back then) 64 was the standard - giving my age away here! Because the responses here seem to suggest that iso 20k should be no problem, how about a future month challenge to show this off at say iso 10k or above!

hi Collin, no camera can handle ISO 20K and come up with something that has critical image quality, it is pure science, there are not enough photons for the sensor to capture. the image will be incredibly noisy and the NR will reduce the details and cause strange artifacts. with a lot of work you might get something good enough for FB but not much more... I'd use it if it is a life bird otherwise why bother? better spend your time doing something more productive.
