    Default Hooded Reflection #2

This is another of the Hooded Merganser posted a couple days ago.

Based on the feedback that he was swimming away and the lack of contrast in the black, I found this one where his body angle was approaching, yet the head was similarly pointed at the camera.

I lowered some contrast/blacks to pull out some detail in the neck. Still a bit dark but better?

Admittedly, the water color (less electric blue) and added ripples detract a bit but if we'd never seen the prior, would our bias be evident?

Lovely shot and I wouldn't pick on anything, except perhaps for that bubble in the reflection.

Very nice indeed, better than previous, I would be tempted to try to get just a little more out of the dark plumage, if you can't well you cant' but if you can all to the good.

This is really nice. These birds are an exposure nightmare in sun, so I think you handled that challenge as well as you could have. The detail in the hood is great. I'm always telling people to get lower on ducks and shorebirds, but I think
you were wise to stay higher to get the reflection here. Wouldn't mind a touch more room behind if you have it.

Beautiful image. The exposure is spot on for me. Nice detail in the white. There will be areas in the blacks with no detail until sensors have quite a bit of more dynamic range.

Excellent exposure. Angle of bird better. Maybe a bit smaller in the frame?

Jonathan, as I lifted blacks and contrast the black in the hood became more washed, as you can see. It is turning sort of tan instead of black and I didn't want to push it any further?

Thanks Dorian. Yeah plenty behind.... scale it up to the left or just scale left to add more on top and bottom?

Thanks Dan. As I asked Dorian, scale the left side and add to top and bottom also?

    Brian,
    behind and in front.
The tail although under water is about touching the edge of frame.
Mergansers are longer than one thinks and awkward to crop.

Nice you have an almost mirror reflection. The crest is great. Love that water as well.
