This one was perched on the rock for longer than usual, so I decided to take different exposures as it posed for me....I liked the BG effect on this one. Handheld whilst sitting on the ground.

    Will:

The extra detail in the background does help tell the story. Did you notice any loss of overall image quality when you stopped down this far? I would think that diffraction might be an issue at this f/stop. I am not familiar enough with your lens to be certain of this however.

I do wonder about some of the purple tones in the sky, and there is some posterization there as well.

    Excellent pose, shooting angle.

    Cheers

This by far, is one of you best Will although I think there are a few tweaks needed to give it a bit more oomph. F/16, did you have a wee dram, think it was a bit excessive and SS a bit low.

Thanks for that guys...I never noticed any loss of IQ Randy...Thinking back, I could have tried the bare lens, I had time to take the TC off....I should have mentioned the BG, no sky ... Behind the bird is heather and grasses..then a coniferous woodland, and above that the bottom of a mountain, which has grasses, heather and rocks on it.

I like the concept but would have preferred the bird back in the frame more as it is too centered as presented. Why f/16? Randy: I have never seen diffraction with a telephoto lens. Have you?

Hi Artie...f/16 was just what I tried, no specific reason other than to change the BG...I have them at f/5.6, 6.3 and 7.1 ....@ f/6.3, gave me SS 1/1600...but the bird was motionless.

Hi Will ... like the image a lot , the isolated subject in the wide landscape !!!!
The slight under view is working very well for me . Lovely fine details visible and the tonal range and colors are spot on . Might just burn the feet feathers a tiny bit , without make them look grey .

    Great work and TFS Andreas

I agree with your self assessment, Love the composition and especially the BG (posterization not withstanding). TFS

Nice view of this grouse. Yes to the bird being more to the left in this one. Like the rock perch and that killer background.

Good pose of the proud looking bird with nice colours and details. Nice clean BG and good rocky perch.

That's a real beauty Will, colours spot on, I would suggest look at the comb and foot feathers but otherwise just beautiful.

I like the proud posture, and the subject perched at the edge of the rock. Yes, pointing your lens a bit more to your right would have been good for the comp. Highly appealing nonetheless, with a terrific BG.
