Very nice indeed Jon, think you have finally got there and all you hard work & perseverance has really paid off. Sharpening looks good and you have a more 'reflective' backdrop rather than that blur/NR app on the early image, cannot see any justification in blurring BKG's.

As an alternative, do you have any higher up in frame?

Well done, have one on me.

Looks good, techs are better. That is why I keep saying that stopping down does not do much except add noise.
This is way better at f4.5.
Getting sharpness and DOF with birds in flight has a lot more to
do with shutter speed and angle of bird in frame.
This would have no better at f16.

Hi Jon ... very very well done !!!

Love this one , and i am very happy for you that your patience and your ongoing trials are really payed off !!!!
I hope you listened carefully ........ noise should be no issue with todays software , even when stopping down . And you are more on the safe side in terms of DOF .... when being close to the subject , as in this case .

A pleasure to look at , keep them coming .

    Andreas,
He did not stop down and this is his best shot yet.
Sometimes I wonder if you look at the techs before you critique?
Some of the advice given to Jon is not what the best BIF photographers do at all.
I look at people like Arash H., Dave Salem and others as photographers I try to emulate.
They never stop down. At least on any photos that I look at.
I will take some of that back, i just looked at Dave Salems Chicken flight photo and he was
    at f6.3.
So rarely but not that often, if you look at his and Arash portfolios.
Jon did well with this because the bird was parallel to the camera.
The f stop did not matter that much.
I think he would have done even better, maybe freeze wings at 1/4000 or 1/5000 and
he would still be at low iso but I would not change the f stop.

this one is right on the money the only improvement I could see is a more uniform BG but I take this one too :)

I agree that the best results are achieved wide open you need the maximum shutter speed you can get and you need to nail the AF. Making up or sloppy AF and technique by stopping down the lens is a common error and the reason for many photos end up as an instant delete like some of the ones posted before

    cheers

Very nicely done. Love the underwing. And the sharpness. Was AF active at the moment of exposure? Bad luck with the o-o-f tree (or pole?).

As for me, I never stop down more than 1/3 stop for flight.
