    Default Stellers Sea-Eagle

In february 2013 I went with a small group of three people to Kamchatka to photograph the majestic Stellers Sea-Eagle. A pionering trip because this was the first time that something similair was organized. The very few local photographers were not happy with our arrival and therefore refused to offer any assistance whatsoever. Pionering can mean two things, you can have all the luck in the world or things can turn into a very dissapointing adventure. Despite all our questions in the months before, the trip was not very well organized. Also we had to deal with two heavy snowstormes. The first one costed two Italians their lives, so when the next one arrived we've received a phonecall from the government to get back to civilization immediately. At that moment we were on our way to a river delta wich ended in the ocean. I was already dreaming of the possibilities that this location would provide. The trip was heading to become a big disaster and on the second last evening I felt as dissapointed as I've never felt before. Fortunatly the organization rented a boat and we had some nice opportunities to capture some Eagles on the ice in the harbour of Petropavlovsk.

Don't know if this is allowed??

During the first snowstorm our Ural truck got stuck in a snowbank due to poor visibility. We've had to dig it out by hand.

Hey Jan .... sad story around this image .

The most impressive and a beauty of an eagle . Like the walking pose and the low POV . Stunning ice color .

Majestic indeed... Sounds like a horrible trip but with this wonderful result... Love those feet/talons, the pose, the spot on EXP, that majestic face and the ice takes it over the top for me, TFS

Love the ice. The walking pose is nice as well. Framing is right on. Light and detail are nice as well.

Wow! That sounds like quite an adventure.
Eagle looks great. Nice POV. Exposure is perfect.
I would like to see a bit more room along right hand side if you have it.
I love the clear view of the talons.

Beautiful image. Good colours, perfect contrast. I love the one claw and curled toe pushing on the ice. I do agree with Gail for wishing for a bit more room behind the tail. Thank you for the story, and the additional photo adds some context to the trip you had.

what a disaster! feel sorry about the lives lost, no trip is worth your life I'd never take a risk like this, especially in a place like Russia.

As for the image I like it a lot, colors, light and details are all there plus the frozen habitat, I agree it needs more room behind the eagle
