I like the image, possibly a little more tonal expression in the hyena's coat would be good.

Hi Sanjeev, I like he portrait & framing, light looks quite nice too, but It doesn't look sharp, that FP should be bang on the eye. Techs look OK as light appears to be of a premium.

Steve, the image RAW is tack sharp and the FP is on the side of the eye. I used 1 round of USM less as everyone felt the lion image was a bit crunchy. Here I used 2 rounds of USM 30, 0.3, 0.

I would rather have the raw Sanjeev. I know we are getting picky, but if we can shed some light on future images for you I think that would be helpful, although non of us are currently thinking about travelling.

Hi Sanjeev ... a really nice portrait of the Hyena . Superb smooth BG .. with some variations in tone and color , which make it attractive .

Not sure about the image from the point of fine detail/ sharpness and some very smooth areas in the fur . Could be natural ... but could be due to NR as well ???!!! You could put some light ... to clear things .

Andreas, no NR applied to fur. It is natural I think. Apart from 2 rounds of USM nothing applied to subject. Maybe more USM?

Hi Sanjeev ... have you set the NR in DPP to zero ???? If not .... than you have applied NR !!!

Not sure if more USM does help ... it all starts with the capture sharpening in DPP . And on the way there are many variables that affect the output .

Sanjeev .... why not , to try ??? Who or what keeps you away from experimenting ???!! Nothing to loose ... apart from a sharp comment .... LOL !!!
Or at least try a lower value , but only change the luminance not the chroma .

Well well .... you said starting point !!! Not the finish line ... . This is also valid for the elephant and the lion ......

The best way is to work with two copies and compare them side by side , you can even do that in DPP .

    OK, thanks for the file.

    - You may want to think about 4 for cases, but again, it depends on what you are shooting
    - Framing not great, too much above. If you lowered the frame and slightly more to the left, your FP would have been closer to the centre and more accuracy. Unless calibrated or MAAF has been done, going further out will decrease sharpness.
    - Single AF point on the eye you had time

The raw isn't critically sharp, even taking into account for a higher ISO, but exposure is fine. Metering good, 'picture style' fine, as it's almost static I think you could have gone for a low frame rate and allow the AF to do it's job.

    ATTACHED IS FF, IGNORE COLOUR.

Sanjeev, very basic adjustments, WB is optional, just waned to get a mid grey, some very simple LR masking/sharpening, then output to something close to your OP, hopefully? It's not a comparison, just thought it may help to a degree. The main point was just to see both camera & raw to give/provide hopefully some pointers.

Hi Sanjeev ... would be great if you could tell that the posted image is cropped to quite a " high " degree . The more info we get .... the easier it is to create a decent and solid critique .
Personally I would trust Steve´s thoughts when he inspected the technical side of the shot ....

    Cheers Andreas

I like this portrait. The framing is nice and the pose and intent stare are another bonus. Like the background as well.

  19. Thanks Sanjeev Aurangabadkar thanked for this post
