I had the fortunate opportunity to spend 4 days in Barcelona last week while attending a workshop. It was my very first visit to Spain and I managed to sneak away for a couple of precious hours and added 7 new species to my photo collection and 2 (Monk Parakeet and Sardinian Warbler) to my life list.
I created this image of a wild Grey Heron at the Barcelona Zoo in Parc de la Ciutadella. A number of wild herons and Little and Cattle egrets have established a herony within the grounds of the zoo. Unfortunately the light was harsh when I had the opportunity to get out and I had left my flash at home because I had to travel light.
My thanks to Juan Aragonés for providing my some tips on where birds might be photographed. Gracias!

Unusual angle Stephen, it works nicely. I only wish the lower toe's claw wasn't clipped. Congrats on adding more species to your photography and life lists!
Stephen you are wellcome:) I am glad that you enjoyed your short trip to Barcelona, next time you will have to go to Delta del Ebro, one of the very best places in europe for acuatic birds.
Too bad that the light was so harsh but the pose and the sharpness is really fantastic. I have to say that it is, by no way, easy to photograph grey herons in Spain, the wild colony at Barcelona´s Zoo is a are example, the GH are very tame birds in Spain.
