Judy nice image. I like the effect of the water ripples which give the sense of motion here. I see a touch of catchlight in the reflection but not in the hatchling's eye. Perhaps a touch of fill flash might have helped.
Super Judy Lynn. Outstanding water ripple and reflection. You can still see the "egg tooth" on the chick- the little light spot at the end of the bill. At least I think that's what it is. They use it to scratch the inside of the eggshell so that they can start pipping out of the egg. The egg tooth is lost a short while after hatching so if this is an egg tooth, this chick is pretty young. But what species is it? My guess is a stilt but I don't see them much up here in New Brunswick!
John many thanks for the info on the egg tooth. It was most interesting to me and you are right it is a baby black-necked stilt that was only a few hours old. I took this image early one morning and the baby had hatched the previous night. A soft sh Judylynnelled turtle had come to the nest and that was the reason the parents were moving the two chicks. Unfortunately one baby was swimming along with it's sibling and all of a sudden it was gone. So hard to witness but survival for the young is not easy.
Unfortunately Jody this was taken from a boardwalk and the deired low angle just was not possible. Many thanks for taking the time to look and for your comments. I appreciate it. Judylynn
Lovely shot. The water rinkles give this a really artistic feel! Love the reflection and isolotion of the little one. Cool shot! I wonder what a small crop from the top would look like though
