    Default Sauvie del Apache (lockdown)

    Attached Images Attached Images

A bike ride today outside the metro area where I live (Portland Oregon),
to photograph Sandhill cranes on Sauvie Island (thus the title).
It is still possible to photo in these times and essential to me (I would go crazy).
    Just be responsible.
Not exactly Bosque del Apache, the best I could do.
    It was also raining.....

Fun capture, Dan. Great light, typical Sandhill Crane behavior, and nice and sharp. Though I like the crop, I also could see cropping for just the two main characters.

I like this it is very well exposed and you caught the action very well. I particularly like the 3D appearance the image conveys.

    Dan:

Nice interaction between the two main subjects. The soft light gave you a nice dynamic range. I can also see a crop for just the main two, but suspect the image quality might suffer. I noticed some sharpening artifacts or halos around the birds, esp. the head of the right main subject.

Good to get out and move around!

I am so jealous of your ability to move around town. We are in lock down here in Nova Scotia.
The first thing I thought of when I saw this image was to crop so as to feature the 2 main birds.
I feel like the image needs a bit of CW rotation.

    Gail,
we are in lockdown in essence, one of the first areas, going on almost 3 weeks here,
but we can go out, walk, ride bikes, just be responsible.
The refuge where I photo the Harriers is still open, but
required driving which we can still do, but I choose not to now until this ends.
    Nothing except food stores open.
Most all parks, refuges, etc. are closed.
This was taken on farm land, just myself and the Cranes...

Your situation resembles what we have here in Ontario. I can move around and go to spots that I know has no one else frequenting. Problem is people are starting to get upset at others using their vehicles to move around for "non-essential" displacements. Good thing there is a forest close-by!!

Your image is fun and with good interaction. A bit of noise on the feathers, and the in-focus line of grass looks odd and over-sharpened - I would omit sharpening that part. I like the bird at far right (but a bit more canvas for it there would work), but the top two not so much.

Wish the rain was heavier. Really love rain in any frame. The bird on the right has a very nice pose.

Hi Dan, nice that you can get out, Polk County in Florida is on stay at home except for essential reasons. As of yesterday the whole state is on stay at home. I like the action of the Sandhill Cranes, not sure why but the grass appears very crunchy. I don't mind the out of focus birds. Thank you for sharing.
