Think it needs a tad more USM Jon.

Is the stick angled, as the DoF tails off both on the L & RH side, maybe increase your DoF to say f/8 here Jon? Colours overall are nice and complimentary.

Steve the perches are changed pretty much daily, using a different lens combination so I tried 5.6, the tip of the tail is just off.....have to confess I am not losing much sleep over it

Lovely bird with great colors, beautiful background. Yes, in a perfect world the perch would be aligned with the focal plane, and a bit more DOF; but quite a nice image in my book.

    Beautiful setting!
I like the perch and the moss even though it is a little bit plain. A branch with more dimensions would fill the frame better even if it makes for a more challenging composition. But for these kinds of shots it is almost all about the perch.
I agree that some more DOF would have been good and that the image needs more sharpening. Otherwise a great background, spot on pose and good colors.

Beautiful gold finch. The garden set up sure is a killer. Looks the complete opposite of the goldfinches over here. Like the framing and that background.

Great looking bird, captured in lovely soft light with an exceptional background. Very nice head turn as well.

Thanks very much everyone, I note the comments regarding sharpening, I did in fact lower the amount of sharpening I usually apply, I will use a little more on my next post.

what a pretty shot, love the BG, perch , colors and HA. If mine I'd sharpen him more. neat HA. I wish the tip of the perch was a bit sharper too, it has become a tad distracting, it can be cloned out as an option.

It seems you changed gear recently, I gotta say the small sensor camera seems to struggle producing the same IQ as your previous gig (1DX ?) clarity and critical sharpness just isn't there but that is to be expected . you can probably improve it with more sharpening and optimizing your workflow . I have a Fuji XT3 APS-C mirrorless camera, belive has better IQ than the rest of them and this images look very similar to what comes out of that camera, it's just a bit lacking, I can't tell exactly what but it just isn't there IMO... I use my Fuji only for video.

    not sure why you switched.
