    Default White Ibis Preening

Made this image in Florida in April when I was trying out my new Canon 40D (thanks again, Roman!). Since I am really new to this and want to learn everything I can, all C&C are greatly appreciated! :) I kind of like the second OOF bird in the background because I think it looks like a mirror image, but not sure if it works and would love to know some thoughts from all of you. Thanks.

    Info: Canon 40D with 100-400/4.5 lens with 1.4 TC @ 560mm. ISO 100. 1/500 @ f/9.0

I am also very very new to this, I like the image very much, the exposure, composition, detail, I would leave some room over the head, it might be a little tight.

I agree with the other's comments. The bird is delightful. Interesting position. Nice visual flow from the head, down the beak. The second bird doesn't work for me; I didn't know what it was. :-(

Exposure is very good and nice BG to go with the bird. I like the preening action. Two possibilities I see are

    1. More room up top as mentioned
2.I am a little bothered by the rear wing, too out of focus. You could have stopped down for more DOF or waited for the wig to get behind the bird. This is not a critical thing to me but just wanted to mention it so you can see and additional bit of criticism for next time.

    Good job!!!

Another vote for evicting rear bird There is no recognizable shape there You need to have mirror images !!!!

The image is tight as presented and would rather have the head parallel to the film plane. You did make a good exposure and lined up for a good bg !!
btw will have an upcoming motif having juxtaposed birds !!!!

Really well done exposure wise and sharp too. Would like some room at the top and agree about the other bird

Agree with all of the above.

Made the changes - real quick and dirty - so pls dont judge on the quality of the repairs.

Just to give the idea of the improvement

Much better this way, now I think I might like a little slice off the right side.

Thanks everyone, for your input on this image. Once again, Lance, you did a great job on the re-post. I definitely see why the image is better without the bird in the background, and I agree with everyone on the original being too tight.

I am learning so much and really appreciate the comments/critiques.

Hope you all had a good 4th of July weekend! :)

    Hi Jodee,
A little late to the party...........but as you see.........Lance's version of the original was an improvement! I also agree with a bit of a crop now off the right.........will put more emphasis to the direction the Ibis is pointing to.
It was fun shooting this Sunday at Nickerson....even though it was a bit too overcast. If you can apply some of the comments to the gulls and Oystercatchers there........you will definitely have a few more keepers if the light is improved. I'm sure George would also be willing to help.......as that is his backyard! Keep up the good work!

Thanks, Roman, for your input on the image. I agree with taking some off the right in Lance's repost. Glad we got the chance to work together at Nickerson. Even though conditions weren't great, it was a wonderful learning experience for me. And, George, I was thinking of heading out there this weekend as well - will wait to hear from you about Sunday. Either of the two days is good for me.

    You guys are great.
