    Default Three Musketeers

    Hello Everyone,

Found a colour version of the Eles, only this time there are three subjects in the frame Shot at the same location, about the same time, identical lighting conditions as my previous B/W image. Light was a bit flat as you can see.

Wasn't impressed with this colour version, this is why I never posted it. So let me know what you think, do you prefer this to the B/W?

    Techs as follows:

    Nikon D5
    Nikon 500mm F4
    ISO 1600
    F6.3
    +0.3 EV
    1/2000s

Hope you all have a lovely day tomorrow... whew, week-end is near

    Warmest regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

Hi Gabriela ... love the three musketeers !!!
Great short moment captured . Setting is as is ... and nothing you can do about . I am actually fine with the color version ... might warm up the ellies a bit . Details in the hide are looking very good , so does the overall color/tone.

B&W will work the same as previous posting by you ... you will have the same issues with the bush and the elephant behind the bush .

But you can try ... you never know .

    TFS Andreas

Bison without Leopard is on the way ... in some minutes , to appear here above your ellies .

I prefer the colour version by far Gabriela, how about a very simple drop in curves and just mask the elephants out? I like the interaction and I am always puzzled how they avoid getting their eyes poked out!

    Gabriela:

I also prefer the color for this image. I am with Jon. I took a slightly different tack to get there. Selected the elephants, added an inverted mask, and then applied a multiply blend mode (100%) that was applied only to the background. You know the elephants actual coloration better than I, and perhaps they need to be darker, but I think the background looks much more engaging with the tweak. Just an easy option.

    Cheers

Hi Gabriela and Randy ... well matter of taste the RP .

Multiply is not the way to go IMHO , at least not in the way you did it , Randy . Saturation is boosted and the tones in the darker areas are becoming too dense . With that treatment elephants become rather flat ... and i think the elephants are the subjects not the surroundings .
    Well just my 2 cents.

Well Andreas, I like a person with strong convictions.

There are many ways to approach this image, and perhaps my multiply blend mode was a little heavy handed, but I wanted to make the point the background could be massaged to give it a bit more oomph. The elephants still dominate the image for me, even as I posted it.

    Cheers

    Dear Jon, Andreas and Randy

My image is probably close to reproducing what was really there, and this was certainly not my intention because I love vibrancy and colour and really wished I could have teased more out of the subjects. Unfortunately in terms of the eles there wasn't that much to work with, I guess because of lighting conditions at the time. So another way of achieving more 'oomph' is what Randy did, enhance the environment.

Thank you very much Randy - I like your idea, and even though I felt you went a bit far with the first RP ( I like the second one more) I understand where you are going and will bear this in mind for future images. Really appreciate your contribution in this Forum as well as thoughtful comments, keep them coming please

    Kind regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

Andreas, I apprecaite your point but I like Randy's repost, I also think luminosity works on curves quite well.

Jon - what i said is just my personal taste that i do not like it .... not the bible. From the technical aspect the edit is done quite crude and i prefer more delicate changes in general . And there are numerous and different ways to target the luminosity .... and for me they have to go along with the use of lumo masks and not plain on the image . But hey we all work differently ....

I like the interaction here. Nice to see the elephants in the open. The setting is nice. Looks like this has already been discussed in length. I enjoyed viewing this one.

Hi gabriela, yes a fun image and I like the behavioural aspect. I would keep it simple, I might take a sliver off the top, have the Ele's not as heavy (dark) and just balance out that LHC with a Graduate filter.
