Default Six Ibis and a Gull

Early in June, as the Quintana mudflats were drying up as a result of a drought, many birds had to share the dwindling pools of water. Here a group of White Ibis had some sort of disagreement. I realize that photographing groups of birds is more problematic than a single bird, and although I like the bird's wing positions, the action, and other aspects of the image, I realize that there are problems that I can't quite put my finger on.

I think the main problem here is that there is no clear subject to focus on, no compelling action that catches your eye. Just a bunch of birds flapping their wings. I'd be curious what others have to say. Also, I would crop a little off the left and add a little on the right.

The light doesn't look ideal, but I do like two things of this shot, one are the poses of the arriving birds, and two, the oposite expressions of the Ibis (hey, glad you came look) and the Gul (oh my.. more Ibis look) I don't know, it's a nice shot, wich I happen to like! Congrats. :)

Doug: I agree with your assessment. and I think you have pointed to the main reason why I myself felt here were problems with the image. If any bird would be the focus, it would be the ibis with the open bill, but it is probably not in a strong enough visual position, As for a bunch of birds flapping their wings, I now agree it looks like that. In actuality, the birds were all peacefully grazing, something happens, and and a number rise up in a cacophony of load "grunts". The memory of this event explains it to me, and actually adds something to the image in my mind, but since there is no way for another viewer to know this, it looks like a group of birds arriving and flapping their wings. Its funny how the memory of the event has effected my ability to judge the image properly.
Ramon: I felt the lighting was a problem as well. What confounds me is that although a the sun was little too high in the sky, it was at my back. I was thinking that the similarity of foreground and background colors was detrimental and not the lighting? I don't know. I'm glad you liked the shot.~onlybill
